“…The pedagogy of the Mobile Museum is chance, wonder and interpretation. Viewers are invited to handle the contents of the museum: something you would never do in a typical gallery or museum. Also the artist’s whose work was shown travel with the museum and engage atypical arts audiences. These audiences have more questions than the average viewer and the artist and curator are present to answer them. “

Homework Due: Monday Feb 13th.

Collecting Fieldwork

This week your assignment is to learn about different kinds of collections, identify types of collections that are interesting to you, and create a collection that you will bring to class on Monday. This collection will be the cornerstone of your next assignment and will shape how and who you will work with for the remainder of the coLAB class.

To begin:

1. Start by researching collections and places that house them.

Think about museums, libraries, storerooms, cabinets of curiosity, and historical societies. What other places might house collections? What ways do they organize or display their collections? Look at some of the links on the coLAB site. (By the way, did you ever visit Grandpa Jerry’s Clown Museum?)

What kinds of unusual things do people collect? What things do you collect? Take some time and print out at least 5 images of odd or unique collections.

2. Think about last semester and your experience of collecting on the line. What did you learn about collecting for art making? How many items make a good collection? What contributes to a boring collection? How are the items related (i.e. must they be the same item?)

Think about what you find interesting. Make a list of 50 things that you might collect. Be open. These might be taken from nature, collected over the week, be invented or created, belong to your grandmother… it is up to you to decide according to your interests. Think about WHAT the collect tells us, how does it function?

Please note: Your collection cannot be a normally collectable item such as baseball cards, spoons, or hats. It might be helpful to think about a theme or idea so that you can build on this rather than revert to mainstream collectables.

3. Collect/Make/Purchase/Procure your collection/s. You should create at least one or two interesting collections. Depending on the collection, you should have at least 25-30 items in each collection. If the items are small or less detailed, you should have more items, maybe even 75! Think about how you collect the items and if this becomes part of your project idea. For example, if you go door to door asking for donations of a tea cup, it might be interesting to know this.

DUE: Monday February 13 at 8am. Bring collections to class, all of your research print outs and list of 50 things you’d like to collect. Arrange everything on a wall/table/shelf.

Good Luck!
